Australia Post highlights three nationally threatened bird species

Australia Post's Endangered Birds issue, released on 27 January according to the official 2026 bulletin and product listing, draws attention to Australian species classified as endangered or critically endangered under federal environmental legislation. The subjects are Carnaby's Black Cockatoo, the Mallee Emu-wren and the Capricorn Yellow Chat, represented in watercolour illustrations by award-winning wildlife artist Frances McMahon.

Australia Post notes that around 29 Australian bird species and subspecies have become extinct since European colonisation and that roughly one in six surviving species is currently threatened. The three AUD 1.70 stamps use philately as a small-format conservation message, placing species from different habitats before a national audience. The issue was listed for withdrawal on 1 August 2026 and was supported by a miniature sheet, maxicards and a stamp pack.

For collectors, the issue joins birds, wildlife art, conservation and endangered-species themes. The miniature sheet and set of three maxicards are formats within the same programme and should be linked to the master issue record. The conservation status and scientific identification of each bird should be retained in detailed catalogue notes where official data is available.
