Australia opens 2026 programme with Year of the Horse stamps

Australia Post opened its 2026 stamp programme on 6 January with a Lunar New Year issue celebrating the Year of the Horse. Designed by Chrissy Lau, the stamps use red and gold, colours strongly associated with luck and celebration in many Asian cultures. Flame-like treatments in the horse's mane and tail refer specifically to the Fire Horse, while a stippled texture suggests glowing embers.

The issue comprises three denominations: AUD 1.70 for domestic use, AUD 3.40 and an AUD 3.50 international stamp. Australia Post listed the withdrawal date as 31 December 2026. The designs connect the zodiac animal with qualities traditionally associated with people born in Horse years, including confidence, energy, sociability and leadership.

For collectors, this is both the opening Australian issue of the year and part of the long-running international field of Lunar New Year philately. The three-rate structure, strongly coordinated artwork and range of associated products make it relevant to thematic collections of zodiac signs, horses, festivals and Asian culture. Collectors should distinguish the Australian issue from the separate Christmas Island Year of the Horse products released on the same date.
