Canada Post Black History stamps celebrate early Canadian hip-hop

Canada Post unveiled its 2026 Black History Month stamps on 28 January, honouring three trailblazing forces in Canadian hip-hop: Maestro Fresh Wes, Michie Mee and the Montréal group Muzion. The issue recognises artists who helped establish rap within Canada's music industry while developing work rooted in distinct Canadian, Black and Haitian-Québécois experiences.

Designers Noël Nanton and Nadia Molinari of typotherapy used varied type sizes to echo musical rhythm. Metallic silver, black duotone portraits, fluorescent inks that glow under black light, and layered matte and gloss varnishes evoke the visual culture of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Lowe-Martin printed the issue, which includes six Permanent domestic-rate stamps and three official first-day covers. Toronto is the cancellation site for Maestro Fresh Wes and Michie Mee, while Montréal is used for Muzion.

The release expands Black History philately into contemporary popular culture and bilingual Canadian music history. Multiple stamps and separate first-day covers create several collectable components, while the fluorescent and varnish effects deserve technical documentation. Collectors should record the three subjects individually while retaining their relationship as one coordinated issue.
