USPS reveals Linda McCartney photography stamps and New York launch
Philately NewsThe United States Postal Service announced on 24 August 2026 that a pane of stamps featuring photographs by Linda McCartney will be issued at a first-day ceremony in New York on 25 September. The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Eastern Time at the Museum of Modern Art, and attendance requires advance registration through the USPS event page.
The pane contains 20 stamps in five designs, each reproducing a different nature or still-life photograph by McCartney. Its selvage carries a black-and-white self-portrait showing her behind a camera. USPS art director Derry Noyes designed both the stamps and the pane, providing a unified presentation for the photographs rather than treating them as unrelated individual images.
McCartney, who lived from 1941 to 1998, became known for informal photographs of musicians during the 1960s as well as images of family life, animals and everyday scenes. USPS notes that her 1968 portrait of Eric Clapton made her the first female photographer whose work appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone. Her photography was later exhibited in the United States and at institutions including the Royal Photographic Society and the Victoria and Albert Museum in Britain. She was also prominent in animal-rights advocacy and the vegetarian movement.
The issue will interest collectors of photography, music, women artists, animals and social advocacy. Five designs within one pane create identifiable positional and design combinations, while the self-portrait in the selvage gives intact panes additional visual context. The museum setting also directly connects the postal release with McCartney’s status as a photographic artist.
USPS has not yet named the ceremony participants in its announcement. The notice also does not provide the denomination wording, stamp dimensions, printer, printing process, plate layout, quantity or first-day cancellation designs. Stamps and related philatelic products are expected through normal USPS sales channels, while ceremony attendance requires a separate RSVP.
