Muhammad Ali honoured on two United States Forever stamp designs

The United States Postal Service issued two Muhammad Ali Forever stamp designs on 15 January in Louisville, Kentucky, honouring the three-time heavyweight champion in his home city. Both use a cropped black-and-white Associated Press photograph from 1974 showing Ali in a boxing stance, paired with bold typographic treatments of his name and his celebrated description as 'The Greatest.'

The stamps were released in an indivisible pressure-sensitive pane of 20, and USPS printed 22 million. The issue recognises not only Ali's boxing achievements but also his public influence as an advocate for peace, faith, justice and humanitarian causes. His international relief work, appointment as a United Nations messenger of peace and receipt of the Presidential Medal of Freedom form part of the broader legacy presented by USPS.

For philatelists, the two-design pane connects sport, civil rights, religion, popular culture and humanitarian themes. Because the pane must not be split for postal sale, intact panes and first-day material from Louisville are natural collection targets. Commercial use of the two designs may also offer different visual combinations on cover.
